How to Keep God’s Special Day Holy
In a previous lesson we learned that the seventh day of the week is God’s holy Sabbath day, instituted at creation. In the fourth commandment the very first sentence states we are to remember to keep it holy. In this lesson we want to explore just HOW God wants us to keep His special day holy.
- What makes the Sabbath day holy?
Exodus 20:11: “For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.”
It is the presence of God that makes something holy.

Exodus 29:43-46 “And there I will meet with the children of Israel, and the tabernacle shall be sanctified by my glory. And I will dwell among the children of Israel, and will be their God. And they shall know that I am the LORD their God, that brought them forth out of the land of Egypt, that I may dwell among them: I am the LORD their God.”
Joshua 5:13-15 “And it came to pass, when Joshua was by Jericho, that he lifted up his eyes and looked, and, behold, there stood a man over against him with his sword drawn in his hand: and Joshua went unto him, and said unto him, Art thou for us, or for our adversaries? And he said, Nay; but as captain of the host of the LORD am I now come. And Joshua fell on his face to the earth, and did worship, and said unto him, What saith my lord unto his servant? And the captain of the LORD’S host said unto Joshua, Loose thy shoe from off thy foot; for the place whereon thou standest is holy. And Joshua did so.”
- If we are to keep the Sabbath holy, and God’s presence is what makes something holy, then we must be holy. Is that possible?
2 Peter 1:4: “Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.”

Genesis 1:5, 8: “And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day. . . . And God called the firmament Heaven. And the evening and the morning were the second day.”

31 And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good. And the evening and the morning were the sixth day. - So, when does the Sabbath begin?
Leviticus 23:32: “It shall be unto you a sabbath of rest, and ye shall afflict your souls: in the ninth day of the month at even, from even unto even shall ye celebrate your sabbath.”
Since the evening is the first part of the day, then SABBATH begins at sundown on Friday and ends at sundown on Sabbath.
- For what purpose did God create the Sabbath?
Exodus 31:17: “It is a sign between me and the children of Israel for ever: for in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, and on the seventh day he rested, and was refreshed.”
Leviticus 23:3: “Six days shall work be done: but the seventh day is the sabbath of rest, an holy convocation; ye shall do no work therein: it is the sabbath of the LORD in all your dwellings.” - Is any work to be done on the Sabbath?
Exodus 20:9-11: “Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work: But the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates: For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.”

Deuteronomy 5:12-14 “Keep the sabbath day to sanctify it, as the LORD thy God hath commanded thee. Six days thou shalt labour, and do all thy work: But the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, nor thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thine ox, nor thine ass, nor any of thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates; that thy manservant and thy maidservant may rest as well as thou.”
Jeremiah 17:21-22 “Thus saith the LORD; Take heed to yourselves, and bear no burden on the sabbath day, nor bring it in by the gates of Jerusalem; Neither carry forth a burden out of your houses on the sabbath day, neither do ye any work, but hallow ye the sabbath day, as I commanded your fathers.”
Hebrews 13:8 states that Jesus (God) does not change. The point was established in a previous lesson that because God does not change, neither do His laws.
- What did Jesus Himself say about whether or not His law changes?
Matthew 5:17-18: “Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil. For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.”
What was good for the Israelites of old is good for us today.
- What is the sixth day of the week, or the day before the Sabbath, called?
Mark 15:42: “And now when the even was come, because it was the preparation, that is, the day before the sabbath.”

Strong’s Concordance says preparation means readiness, to get ready, to prepare. So the preparation day is a day to prepare or get ready for the Sabbath.

Exodus 34:21 “Six days thou shalt work, but on the seventh day thou shalt rest: in earing time and in harvest thou shalt rest.” - What instruction did God give Israel in regards to preparing for the Sabbath?

Exodus 16:22-30
22 And it came to pass, that on the sixth day they gathered twice as much bread, two omers for one man: and all the rulers of the congregation came and told Moses.
23 And he said unto them, This [is that] which the LORD hath said, Tomorrow is the rest of the holy sabbath unto the LORD: bake that which ye will bake today, and seethe that ye will seethe; and that which remaineth over lay up for you to be kept until the morning.
24 And they laid it up till the morning, as Moses bade: and it did not stink, neither was there any worm therein.
25 And Moses said, Eat that today; for today is a sabbath unto the LORD: to day ye shall not find it in the field.
26 Six days ye shall gather it; but on the seventh day, which is the sabbath, in it there shall be none.
27 And it came to pass, that there went out some of the people on the seventh day for to gather, and they found none.
28 And the LORD said unto Moses, How long refuse ye to keep my commandments and my laws?
29 See, for that the LORD hath given you the sabbath, therefore he giveth you on the sixth day the bread of two days; abide ye every man in his place, let no man go out of his place on the seventh day.
30 So the people rested on the seventh day. - What special blessing did God give His people when they made their Sabbath preparation on the sixth day?
Exodus 16:24: “And they laid it up till the morning, as Moses bade: and it did not stink, neither was there any worm therein.”
Notice in verse 23 that even the cooking and baking for the Sabbath is to be done on the preparation day.
- What does the prophet Isaiah have to say about whose work we should do on the Sabbath day?
Isaiah 58:13-14: “If thou turn away thy foot from the sabbath, from doing thy pleasure on on my day; and call the sabbath a delight, the holy of the LORD, honourable; and shalt honour him, not doing thine own ways, nor finding thine own pleasure, nor speaking thine own words: Then shalt thou delight thyself in the LORD; and I will cause thee to ride upon the high places of the earth, and feed thee with the heritage of Jacob thy father: for the mouth of the LORD hath spoken it.” - Should we attend public worship on the Sabbath?

Strong’s Concordance says convocation means a public meeting.
Hebrews 10:25: “Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.”
- What did Jesus do on the Sabbath day?
Luke 4:16, 31: “And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up: and, as his custom was, he went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and stood up for to read. . . . And came down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee, and taught them on the Sabbath days.”

1 Peter 2:21 says that Christ was our example and in John 13:15 Jesus Himself said He has given us an example. One example He gave us was attending church for the purpose of worship each Sabbath.
1 Peter 2:21 “For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps:”
John 13:15 “For I have given you an example, that ye should do as I have done to you.”
- Psalms 92 is considered a Psalm for the Sabbath day. What do the first four verses suggest as proper activity and themes for meditation on the Sabbath?
Psalms 92:1-4: “It is a good thing to give thanks unto the LORD, and to sing praises unto thy name, O most High: To shew forth thy lovingkindness in the morning, and thy faithfulness every night, upon an instrument of ten strings, and upon the psaltery; upon the harp with a solemn sound. For thou, LORD, hast made me glad through thy work: I will triumph in the works of thy hands.” - What is to be our conduct as we enter the House of God, especially the sanctuary, for worship?
Leviticus 19:30: “Ye shall keep my sabbaths, and reverence my sanctuary: I am the LORD.”

Matthew 12:9-21

10 And, behold, there was a man which had his hand withered. And they asked him, saying, Is it lawful to heal on the sabbath days? that they might accuse him.
11 And he said unto them, What man shall there be among you, that shall have one sheep, and if it fall into a pit on the sabbath day, will he not lay hold on it, and lift it out?
12 How much then is a man better than a sheep? Wherefore it is lawful to do well on the sabbath days.
13 Then saith he to the man, Stretch forth thine hand. And he stretched it forth; and it was restored whole, like as the other.
14 Then the Pharisees went out, and held a council against him, how they might destroy him.
15 But when Jesus knew it, he withdrew himself from thence: and great multitudes followed him, and he healed them all;
16 And charged them that they should not make him known:
17 That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying,
18 Behold my servant, whom I have chosen; my beloved, in whom my soul is well pleased: I will put my spirit upon him, and he shall shew judgment to the Gentiles.

20 A bruised reed shall he not break, and smoking flax shall he not quench, till he send forth judgment unto victory.

Mark 3:1-6

2 And they watched him, whether he would heal him on the sabbath day; that they might accuse him.
3 And he saith unto the man which had the withered hand, Stand forth.
4 And he saith unto them, Is it lawful to do good on the sabbath days, or to do evil? to save life, or to kill? But they held their peace.
5 And when he had looked round about on them with anger, being grieved for the hardness of their hearts, he saith unto the man, Stretch forth thine hand. And he stretched it out: and his hand was restored whole as the other.
6 And the Pharisees went forth, and straightway took counsel with the Herodians against him, how they might destroy him.

In summary then, we are to keep the Sabbath holy by first being holy ourselves (Leviticus 19:2); by doing all our work in six days (Exodus 20:9); not doing our own pleasure, but call the Sabbath a delight (Isaiah 58:13); make special preparations for the Sabbath on Friday (Exodus 16:22-23); observe the Sabbath from sundown Friday to sundown Sabbath (Leviticus 23:32); attend church each Sabbath (Hebrews 10:25); do good on the Sabbath (Mark 3:4). Test yourself on proper Sabbath observance; does it honor God?
“When Jesus turned upon the Pharisees with the question whether it was lawful on the Sabbath day to do good or to do evil, to save life or to kill, He confronted them with their own wicked purposes. They were hunting His life with bitter hatred, while He was saving life and bringing happiness to multitudes. Was is better to slay upon the Sabbath, as they were planning to do, than to heal the afflicted, as He had done? Was it more righteous to have murder in the heart upon God’s holy day than love to all men, which finds expression in deeds of mercy?
“In the healing of the withered hand, Jesus condemned the custom of the Jews, and left the fourth commandment standing as God had given it. ‘It is lawful to do well on the Sabbath days,’ He declared. By sweeping away the senseless restrictions of the Jews, Christ honored the Sabbath, while those who complained of Him were dishonoring God’s holy day.
“Those who hold that Christ abolished the law teach that He broke the Sabbath and justified His disciples in doing the same. Thus they are really taking the same ground as did the caviling Jews. In this they contradict the testimony of Christ Himself, who declared, ‘I have kept My Father’s commandments, and abide in His love,’ John 15:10. Neither the Saviour nor His followers broke the law of the Sabbath. Christ was a living representative of the law. No violation of its holy precepts was found in His life. Looking upon a nation of witnesses who were seeking occasion to condemn Him, He could say unchallenged, ‘Which of you convinceth me of sin?. . .’ John 8:46.
“The Saviour had not come to set aside what patriarchs and prophets had spoken; for He Himself had spoken through these representative men. All the truths of God’s word came from Him. But these priceless gems had been placed in false settings. Their precious light had been made to minister to error. God desired them to be removed from their settings of error and replaced in the framework of truth. This work only a divine hand could accomplish. By its connection with error, the truth had been serving the cause of the enemy of God and man. Christ had come to place it where it would glorify God, and work the salvation of humanity.” The Desire of Ages, pages 287-288.
